More of Manchester

Last week, we gave an overview of Castlefield and Deansgate locks – but they are just two of a number of great areas to live, eat and work in Manchester.  Moving further north:

Deansgate

Driving from North to South Manchester, Deansgate has a real mix of places to eat and drink – from higher end restaurants (like Living Room, San Carlo, and James Martin at Manchester235) through casual dining (a la Byron Burger, La Tasca) and pub grub, all the way down to takeaway fried chicken or Turkish kebabs (which are impossible to resist at 2am on a night out!)

Deansgate has long been an area of town which has had a bit of class about it, and, in general, is a vibrant part of town.  It’s also well connected to Castlefield and the Northern Quarter, so a great place to start a night.

Spinningfields

Billed as ‘the new heart of business in Manchester’, Spinningfields is principally a place for the offices of Manchester’s biggest business names.  Large Accounting and law firms are clustered into the modern high-rise glass and chrome buildings, which have been sympathetically designed around continental-style piazza’s and public space – which means that the cafés and restaurants around here are well suited to lunching, and the bars are tailored for a well-earned post-work beer.

Being in a professional area of town, the bars are somewhat swanky, and the bars around here work hard to be both places that people can enjoy being in, as well as places that people would like to be seen in – but this, naturally, has a price: Spinningfields has some of the most expensive beers in town.

Of particular note, the Alchemist is a very popular bar, the Oast house offers live music and a range of great guest beers, Thai Khun is (in my opinion) the best Thai restaurant in town, and Manchester House is the city’s best chance of getting a Michelin star.
