Mission Christmas – Please help

I don’t know if you’re like me, but I simply can’t resist listening to Key103 on the radio on my morning commute – there’s nothing that makes me smile more than Mike and Chelsey in the morning, and it’s always a great start to the day.  And no, I’m honestly not being paid to say this!

Key103 is something of an institution, and is as much a part of Manchester as the Arndale, G-MEX or the Beetham tower.

And as well as providing compelling local radio, the station are also heavily engaged in local community work – and at this time of year, that means their ‘Mission Christmas’ campaign, where they do incredible work collecting toys or money to give to the less fortunate people in our great City.

Believe it or not, a recent survey estimated that one in three children are living in poverty in Manchester.  In Manchester?!  In this city of sophistication, multi-million-pound sports and business, and buildings of fancy chrome and glass?  It is a shocking statistic.

But statistics are easy to breeze over, so let me put it into some context for you:  Christmas as a child, you will recall, is a time of great joy and excitement, and getting brilliant new toys to play with.  But on Christmas morning in Manchester this year, there will be over 100,000 children who will rush down their stairs and reach into their stockings, only to find that emptiness and disappointment are their gifts this year.  And the experience will be all the worse for their parents, who work so hard, but get so little.  This is happening, here, in our city.

After helping 37,000 kids to have a good Christmas last year, Key103 have set themselves a bigger target of finding presents for a whopping 60,000 children – but this morning, Mike and Chelsey announced that they’re behind their target, and sounded genuinely anguished that they would not be able to help as many children as they would like.

Please, CityCard members, get behind this campaign.  We can’t solve all their problems, but we can at least help them have a good Christmas.  Either donate a toy/gift and drop it off at one of hundreds of drop off points across the city (find them at www.key103.co.uk/mission/) or donate cash or a virtual gift online at the same address.  Do it NOW!
