Bah, Humbug!

Bah, Humbug!

When the most exciting thing about ending national lockdown is that you’ll be able to go and spend more time at a gym, then you know there is a problem.

And so it goes on. After three weeks of Tier 3 local lockdown, and four weeks of national lockdown, we are being given the gift of another three weeks of Tier 3 local lockdown – which means everything is remaining closed for the foreseeable.

Boris Johnson bah humbug

That means no restaurants, no pubs, no bars, no hair salons, no leisure centres, etc… no theatre, no cinema, no live music… no friends, no family (even in your garden), no work colleagues… and essentially no fun.

They’ve promised to ‘review’ what tier we are in in a fortnight, but I think we all know which way this is headed – the best case is that we get into the dizzy heights of Tier 2, but more likely, we will be stuck in Tier 3 before and after Christmas, there will be a new national lockdown in January and February, and we can wave goodbye to doing anything meaningful or fun until Easter 2021.

The big problem is that all this lockdown means that we honestly don’t know what we are going to wake up to in Easter 2021: will any bars or restaurants be able to survive? will any of the small shops, or freelance beauticians? Even the likes of Topman and Dorothy Perkins have gone bust, so what hope has a little independent got?

Everything is a shambles. It would be at least understandable if this was a natural disaster, but this destruction of small businesses is literally being done by Government choice and ideology. We’re busy panicking and shutting everything down because of a virus affecting 0.02% of the population.
